Overview
The ONC Health IT Certification Program tests EHR and health IT software against federal standards for interoperability, security, and data structure, through ONC-authorized certification bodies. Software that passes becomes Certified Electronic Health Record Technology (CEHRT) – the label providers need to qualify for CMS incentive programs and avoid payment penalties.
Why it matters
A healthcare product that isn’t built toward ONC’s certification criteria can lock providers out of CMS reporting programs entirely, no matter how good the software is otherwise. The requirements aren’t static, either – certification criteria get updated periodically, and software has to keep pace or lose its certified status.
How Dotcode applies it
On EHR-adjacent projects, we map required data classes and interoperability standards to ONC’s current certification criteria early, so certification testing isn’t a late surprise.
