Overview
Meaningful Use was the original name for the federal incentive program that paid providers for adopting certified EHR technology; it’s now called the Promoting Interoperability Program and, for eligible clinicians, folded into MIPS. Providers earn points by meeting objectives like e-prescribing, patient access, and public health data reporting – and the scoring bar rises most years.
Why it matters
This program is why CEHRT exists in the first place – it’s the demand side that makes ONC certification worth pursuing for EHR vendors. For providers, missing the required score doesn’t just forfeit an incentive anymore; under MIPS it can mean a payment penalty on Medicare reimbursements.
