Overview
FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources) is the modern data standard for exchanging health records between systems – patients, medications, lab results – using REST APIs and JSON instead of the older, harder-to-integrate HL7 v2 messaging format. It’s what lets an EHR, a patient app, and a payer’s system read the same patient record the same way.
Why it matters
Interoperability isn’t a nice-to-have anymore – CMS and ONC rules increasingly require FHIR-based APIs for certified health IT, and payers now run their own patient-access mandates built on it. A system built on proprietary formats instead of FHIR usually means an expensive integration project later, once a mandate or a partner catches up to it.
