Overview
EPCS (Electronic Prescriptions for Controlled Substances) is the DEA framework that lets controlled-substance prescriptions be signed and sent electronically instead of on paper. Before any e-prescribing software can be used for controlled substances, it must be audited and certified by a DEA-approved certification organization – the requirement applies to the software itself, not just the prescriber using it.
Why it matters
Software that handles prescriptions but skips EPCS certification simply can’t be used for controlled substances legally, which is a hard limitation for any doctor-appointment or e-prescribing feature in a clinical product. Prescribers on certified software also need their own two-factor authentication credential, which the product has to support correctly.
