What is Data Privacy & Data Protection?

Software Development

Privacy rules define who can collect and use personal data; protection is what keeps it from leaking. Get one without the other and you’re still exposed — compliant on paper, breached in practice, and paying in fines and lost trust.

Overview

Data privacy is about who has the right to collect, see, and use someone’s personal data. Data protection is the technical and organizational work that keeps that data safe from breaches, leaks, and misuse. The two overlap constantly — a product can be fully compliant on privacy and still get breached because protection was weak.

Why it matters

A data breach costs more than fines, though the fines are real — GDPR penalties alone can reach tens of millions of euros. It costs the trust that’s hardest to earn back. What counts as compliant also depends on where your users are: GDPR in the EU, CCPA in California, HIPAA for US healthcare data all set different bars.

How Dotcode applies it

We build data security and regulatory compliance into architecture decisions from the start of a project, not as a patch applied before launch.
