What is Banking-as-a-Service (BaaS)?

Fintech

Banking-as-a-Service (BaaS) enables companies to embed licensed financial products—such as accounts, debit cards, and payment rails—into their own software platforms via sponsor bank APIs.

Overview

Banking-as-a-Service is a model where a licensed bank exposes its regulated services — accounts, cards, payments, and lending — to other companies through APIs, so those companies can offer financial products under their own brand. It is the infrastructure behind many neobanks and the embedded finance features that appear inside non-financial apps.

Why It Matters

BaaS lets a startup launch a financial product without applying for a banking license, which can cut the time to market from years to months. The trade-off is dependency — regulators have tightened their oversight of sponsor banks and their fintech partners, so a product tied to one provider carries real continuity risk.

How Dotcode Applies It

We design BaaS integrations so the provider sits behind our own service layer, in the spirit of microservices architecture, which keeps a future provider switch from turning into a rebuild.
